Ah, the Asbury boardwalk! Alas, I was only 16 that summer of '80, and had a difficult enough time just getting into Mrs. Jays, let alone the Fast Lane or Pony (though there was never a problem getting served further inland at the 5th Avenue Tavern). Spent the majority of that summer a few blocks further north at the Loch Arbour Village Beach Club, playing volleyball and checking out the bikini-clad lovelies, and attending the occasional gig at the Convention Hall or Paramount Theatre. It wasn't 'til a couple summers later that I really started to hit the clubs on the Shore...only to relocate to La La Land for college that fall....

Here's the dirty little secret about Mrs. Jay's back in the day: if you were a girl, and neither looked nor behaved like a skank, the bikers would look out for you - make sure no one bothered you. We had the best time behaving like someone's little sister and never had a problem.

Dear God, I remember Toots - when I worked at WBCN in Boston, Willy came in for a chat, and Oedipus (whose show I produced)pulled me aside and warned me NOT - under any circumstances - to give even the slightest appearance of flirting with Willy.
As to the Fast Lane, well I identified as a Stone Pony gal. Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday were Jukes nights. End of drill. My girlfriends and I would see the first set, go next door to Mrs. Jay's and drink a pitcher of Heineken, then go across the street and take a few rides on the boardwalk. Then back for the second set. Et cetera.
When I came home from Boston on weekends, I wanted to go to the Pony, but the Fast Lane had better bands for the most part in those days.
You're absolutely right about Norman Nardini, by the way.
